B-Roll
B-roll is supplementary footage intercut with the main shot to add visual variety, context or product demonstration to a video ad.
B-roll is any footage that isn't the primary talking-head or hero shot. In a product ad, b-roll might include close-ups of the product, lifestyle shots of someone using it, warehouse or packaging clips, or screen recordings.
B-roll serves two purposes: it prevents visual monotony (critical in ads longer than 10 seconds) and it shows rather than tells. When the voiceover says "buttery smooth texture", cutting to a close-up of the product texture is more persuasive than holding on a talking head.
For UGC-style ads, b-roll is often shot on the same phone camera as the main footage to maintain a native feel. Jump-cutting between a-roll and b-roll every 2–3 seconds keeps pacing tight and holds attention.
